Best Practice Guide for using the Pintsize Podcasts resources
(Each Podcast Resource Pack also contains this Best Practice Guide)
PLEASE NOTE THAT IN ORDER TO GET THE BEST FROM PINTSIZE PODCASTS, GOOD QUALITY SPEAKERS (OR HEADPHONES) SHOULD BE USED. IT IS ENVISAGED THAT THE RESOURCE WILL BE CONDUCTED AS A WHOLE CLASS/GROUP BASED, SHARED EXPERIENCE.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT IN ANY ONE VENUE, USING YOUR ACCESS EMAIL AND PASSCODE, ONLY ONE STREAM CAN BE ACTIVE AT ANY ONE TIME. YOU MAY WISH TO TIMETABLE USAGE, ON THIS BASIS.
Young people whether at school, in an alternative education venue or being home schooled, should not be accessing any of these podcasts, without a responsible adult being present. Whether a teacher or youth worker, all adults using this resource with young people, should do the following, in advance of use:
- Listen to the podcast and/or read the script.
- Read/review the resource pack.
- Review the ‘Learning Outcomes’ for - and content of - each podcast in relation to recent DfE guidelines as of September 2020 (see below)
- Read and tick the terms of service on the website, if you are in agreement.
- AFTER USE, we ask participants to collate, fill out and return the staff response sheet and student response sheet (we ask for a sample of approximately 30 collated student responses ie a single class, and all teachers/adults who have used/managed the resource) A parent/carer sheet is also available for those home schooling. Please return the response to ian@pintsizetheatre.co.uk
You may decide:
-to pause the streaming at particular points.
-to jump certain sections, bearing in mind the relative maturity of the young people you are working with.
-to use all, some or none of the accompanying resource packs, according to the needs of your young people.
Unlike a live performance, one of the great advantages of this podcast format, is its flexibility regarding the above points; but we do hope that simply playing the podcast, in its entirety, and following up with the resource pack activities, will strike you as the best option.
All of the podcasts range over very serious issues, which can constitute a considerable risk to the health and safety of young people: in order to accurately represent these risks, the stories are told in a manner which reflects real life and relationships; ‘life as it is’ rather than ‘life as we would want it to be’.
Although age appropriate, all of the podcasts are frank and direct about the risks young people may encounter, as they progress through life. We have ensured, however, that all content is in line with current DfE guidelines and local and national ‘best practice’.
The emphasis, however, is always on building resilience through developing coping and avoidance strategies in relation to risk, as well as highlighting pathways to advice and help. That ‘good information can lead to good decision making’, is a simple message embedded in all of the podcasts, as is the need for disclosure and the fact that the first step in sorting any problem out, is talking about it.
Please be aware that disclosures may occur after young people have engaged with these resources.
Pintsize Theatre Ltd (Reg Charity: 1142448) has worked in the community of Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire since 1998, liaising and researching with a myriad of agencies, schools and charities, engaged with and promoting the health and safety of young people. Particular thanks must be extended to Nottinghamshire Police and the city and county safeguarding teams and school venues, which have helped and guided us, in all aspects of our devising work. Huge thanks must also be given to the many small charities and governmental agencies, that have funded and supported our work in the past, particularly Boots Charitable Trust.
Finally, we would like to stress that not exaggerating or over amplifying risk, is an important part of what we do. All of our work is intended to provide young people with a robust and resilient attitude to life and the challenges it can pose – the emphasis is always on formulating positive strategies (in a safe, fictional context) to deal with problems, which may be encountered in real life.
Our emphasis is founded on the belief that life’s challenges, should be embraced and not feared, and that risks should be contextualized and not exaggerated.
